The San Miguel Volcano - Chaparrastique Erupts!

¡Hola!

This week has been great and crazy.  So, as you all probably heard, the San Miguel volcano erupted yesterday.  I heard it erupted 9 miles high!  The two areas in my District, Santiago De María and Berlin, were the first to get hit by the ash and soot because we're higher up.  President Glazier said that we lived the prophecy in Matthew 24:18, "Neither let him which is in the field return back to take his clothes." It was pretty bad.  It seemed like it was snowing, and we had to get hand towels to cover our mouth and noses to not breathe it in.  We got some stuff from our houses and came to San Salvador with one of President Glazier's counselors.  Luckily he was there at our Sacrament Meeting yesterday.  But yeah, we're all fine now and we'll be here until things clear up.

On Friday, we had divisions with Berlin and I stayed in Santiago De María with Elder Edwards.  One of our investigators, Edgar Antonio, who hasn´t been progressing much accepted to be baptized!  As we were in the lesson with him, I could feel the Spirit working through me to help him understand the importance of prayer and the Holy Ghost in receiving an answer.  I know that as he continues to pray that Heavenly Father will answer him and help him continue to prepare for baptism.

We also visited, Nemias, an inactive youth as old as me.  At the beginning of the lesson, I asked him if he had prayed or read the Book of Mormon at all.  He told me that he didn´t, but instead of addressing that, which I should have, I started into the lesson.  We talked about yearly goals, and he told me that he didn´t want to go to church.  I paused to try to listen to the Spirit as to what I should say, and then the sister that was with us started explaining to him that he can´t know the Gospel and increase his faith if he doesn´t try. She explained to him that conversion is a process and that it´s little by little.  He said that he didn´t feel comfortable in the church so I shared an experience of how I moved to a new ward where I didn´t know anyone, but that over time, I felt comfortable, welcome, and I gained new friends.  I felt the Spirit strongly in that lesson and he went to Sacrament Meeting the next day!  I know that as we help him to understand the Gospel and the Atonement that it will bless his life and prepare him to help his branch, prepare to serve a mission, and attend the temple.

I know that the eruption is going to put a little pause on our work, but I know that once we return, we´ll have lots of opportunities of service.  I´m glad I can be here in San Salvador and I hope that I can help the area in any way I can.

Your Sons Are Safe!

Hi--this is Hermana Clark from El Salvador--your sons are safe--they were the first to arrive to the temple grounds from the evacuations from the volcano eruption today.  Your missionaries were the closest to this eruption--they came with only what they could grab at the church--two didn't have time to get their jackets with their name tags on them.  You have great young sons.   They certainly earned the hero award today.   They helped President Glazier and the temple missionaries (us) to set up the lunchroom for the 50 more missionaries that were to come from other districts.  They were calm and very powerful in their manner.  They had experienced the most amazing thing ever--their little city is extremely close to the volcano.  A tender mercy, the counselor to President Glazier decided to visit that city--he had your sons in his car in minutes and they were driving away.  There were a lot of miracles today, the Lord does bless His missionaries.  They were all in church and were able to get to buses and leave within a short time.  President Glazier also decided at the last minute to go that direction and was there to see it all erupt and was calling and getting his precious missionaries to safety.

I wanted to write you all because your missionary sons were so amazing to talk with.  They have giant spirits and they know they experienced a miracle today.  They will be writing tomorrow to tell it all.  I just wanted you to each have a picture of your dear sons and see their super smiles.  They are neat men.

love--Hermana Marilee Clark--Sister to Hermana Glazier--serving with my husband as missionaries in the El Salvador Temple.

Welcome Home Sister San Diego!!

¡Hola!

That's great to hear that Heather arrived safely! Hope you had a great birthday mom and that you guys had a great time celebrating Heather's homecoming!

Ok, we don't have to Skype together as a district so we're going to Skype 1pm your guys' time. I'll be ready so just call using yours so we can do the three way thing.

This week we were able to attend the temple on mom's birthday! It was such a great experience to be able to attend the temple for a spiritual refueling. I love the temple. In the temple we can rest from all our cares and feel the presence of the Lord. I'm grateful for the peace of the temple and all the blessings that come from it.

Out of time, so see you guys in 2 days!

Happy Birthday Mom!

¡Hola!

First of all, Happy Birthday Mom! Hope you have a great day and get some R&R in there! Wow, I can't believe that Heather is already getting back!

Ok, so on Christmas I have 30 minutes to Skype you guys. We aren't allowed to call between 4-9pm our time so it's 3-8pm your guys' time. Also, we're not allowed to use member's stuff and the cyber cafés aren't open that late. Be ready at 12pm your guys' time. We have to do it as a District so we don't know who's going first. I can't wait to talk to all of you!

Remembering Christ this Christmas Season!

¡Hola!

This weekend we were able to participate in District Conference. The focus was on missionary work and I hope that our members were able to learn and receive the desire to reactivate members, befriend recent converts, and participate in the work of salvation. Elder D. Todd Christofferson recently visited Central America and during his visit warned that if the members don't take on their responsibilities and leave everything to the Bishops, Branch Presidents, an Missionaries that the church will stop growing. I have to admit it scared me to hear that. I pray and fast that all of us, members and missionaries, may take upon ourselves the counsel of our prophet President Thomas S. Monson and that we may come together and work together to labor in the Lord's vineyard so that we can continue to grow the church here in Central America. I know that as we as missionaries work hard, are exactly obedient, and exercise our faith in these times of trial that the Lord will pour out His Spirit upon us and that our area and zone will be blessed with miracles.

Last night we were able to bring an investigator to watch the Christmas Devotional. I'm so grateful for this time of year and the spirit that it brings. I'm grateful for our church leaders and their inspired thoughts and testimonies. I'm grateful that each year the world has a chance to change and to meditate about the birth, life, Atonement, death, and resurrection of our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ. I know that He lives. I know that He suffered, bled, and died for each one of us that we might not suffer if we would repent. I'm grateful for the Atonement and I know that through it we are able to be forgiven of sin and be changed as we live the principles and ordinances of the Gospel: Faith, Repentance, Baptism, Receiving the Gift of the Holy Ghost, and Enduring to the End. I know that His grace IS sufficient for us and that we can call upon Him to give us the strength we need. I testify of these things in the sacred name of Jesus Christ, amen.

A Testimony Of Fasting And Prayer

¡Hola!

Well, I'm here in Santiago de María for at least another 6 weeks, yeah! Elder Aldridge said that I might be the successor for the area when he leaves, so I might be here for a while!

This week we had the opportunity to give service for an organization that does eye exams. It was a great experience being able to help people get glasses and be able to see. To relate it to the Gospel, Christ is like our pair of glasses. Without Him, it's hard to focus and see, but with His light everything becomes clear.

Two of our investigators are really close to baptism. One of them is a nine-year-old named Alex Araujo. He's progressing so much! From the lesson that we taught the Word of Wisdom, he has already left coffee. He's also reading the Book of Mormon and every time we go to have a lesson with him he always has a question about what he read. Also, at the end of every lesson, he's always excited to say the prayer. We just need to teach him the rest of the lessons and he has to go to church five more times. When the time comes, I know he'll be ready for his baptism in January. Our other investigator is a man named Edgar Antonio. He has all the lessons and only needs to attend church one more time. He's nervous about baptism because it's such a big commitment and he doesn't want to get baptized and then make a mistake. Elder Aldridge and I are going to visit him our Branch President so we can clear up any of his doubts and fears.

Yesterday was one of the best days at church. My testimony of fasting and prayer have grown. Our branch has been struggling. Attendance has been lower, and our Branch President wasn't helping too much. He worked a difficult work schedule, and he felt like he wasn't doing a good job. Elder Aldridge and I have prayed and fasted for him and our branch, and our prayers have been answered. Recently, he got a break off work for a month. While we had a meeting to discuss the goals for the next three months, we talked to him and let him know that he's not doing a bad job and that he can do it. Yesterday, he bore his testimony and told everyone that he knows that he's not perfect, but it's all of our responsibility to work together as a branch to reach the goals that we set. As he spoke, I could feel the Spirit in the power of his words. I know that from now on, things are going to get better here in Santiago de María, and that together as a branch we're going to reactivate our members and baptize!

Put Your Trust In The Lord!

!Hola!

Well, this might be my last couple of days in Santiago De María. We have a change meeting on Wednesday and we don't find out if we have changes until Tuesday night. Just like in the hymn though, I'll go where He wants me to go!

This week was a little bit of a disappointment. We had to "drop" quite a bit of investigators. Ernesto told us that he just can't stop smoking and he wanted to make sure that we weren't wasting our time. He has all the lessons and attendances and just needs to stop smoking in order to be baptized. We aren't going to visit them as often, but we're still going to visit all of our "dropped" investigators at least once a week.

President and Hermana Glazier sent an email out that throughout the world, the church is seeing a trend in missionaries relying too much on the members and not realizing their own finding efforts. They said that our mission is guilty of doing this, but that together as a mission we can change it! In our mission there has been a decline in investigators progressing, so we need to increase our finding efforts. Elder Aldrige, Elder Sarceño, and I going to improve and make it a goal to street contact as many people as the Lord places in our path as we go to our appointments. I know that as we strive to improve as a mission that the Lord will help and bless us in our efforts.

¡Mis Primeros Bautismos! - My First Baptisms!

¡Hola todos!

This week we were able to witness one of our investigators Emanuel Lopez, and his younger brother Jonathon be baptized by their dad and receive the Gift of the Holy Ghost by one of the branch counselors. It was such a great experience. When Emanuel was first extended the invitation to be baptized, he said no. However, when he was shown a picture of the temple, his eyes lit up! He's really excited about the temple, and he can't wait to go there! Emanuel and his dad both quit drinking coffee together in order to prepare for baptism. It's amazing to see the change in people's lives as they become converted to the Gospel! Emanuel shared his testimony after being baptized and it was inspiring. He shared his favorite scripture and testified that after receiving the Gift of the Holy Ghost that he will be able to "speak with a new tongue, yea, even the tongue of angels." I'm excited for them and the opportunity they will have one day to enter the temple and be sealed together as a family for time and all eternity!

At a meeting we went to, President Glazier used an object lesson with a $10 bill demonstrate vision and goals. He had an Elder try to grab it while he held it above the stage in the stake center while standing on a chair. The Elder just stood on the chair too and grabbed it. The point of it was that not matter how difficult a goal seems, we can achieve it. I know that as we expand our vision that we will work harder and be able to accomplish our goals with the divine help of our Savior Jesus Christ. I know that He lives. I know that through the Atonement of Jesus Christ we can be forgiven of our sins through sincere repentance and receive His grace to help us endure to the end.

This past week my testimony of the Atonement has grown. One day, I had a headache, a fever, and I felt weak, but I knew that I needed to go out and work. As we left our house, I still felt the same, but then I remembered that Christ not only suffered for our sins, but for ALL of our infirmities. I also remembered the video of John Tanner and how his leg was healed. I knew then will all faith and no doubt that if his leg was able to be healed, then I would definitely be healed if I had faith. I prayed sincerely to be healed, and as the day went on, my strength returned, my fever went away, and eventually my headache too. I know without a doubt that the Atonement is real. I know that through the Atonement and our faith, that we can be healed both physically and spiritually.

I'm so grateful for my testimony, and I'm grateful that I have the opportunity to be a representative of Jesus Christ and to share His Gospel with others so that they too may be able to partake of the blessings that I have received in my life. Well, gotta go!

The Power Of The Atonement

¡Hola Todos!

This week has been great! On Saturday we went to visit one of our investigators named Miguel who has a problem with smoking. We wanted him to realize that smoking is a sin because we weren't sure if he completely understood. I could feel the Spirit strongly as I testified of the power of the Atonement, how it has helped me in my life, and how if he has faith and a sincere desire to quit smoking that he will receive divine help and forgiveness of his sins through daily repentance and prayer.

Yesterday, I had the privilege to stand in the circle as one of the branch counselors conferred the Aaronic Priesthood upon one of the recent converts, Mauricio. I've never had that opportunity before, so I'm grateful that I was able to be a part of it.

I'm excited for this Saturday because one of our investigators Emanuel and his younger brother Jonathon are going to be baptized by their dad. All three of them used to drink coffee, but together they were able to leave it. It's so great to see a family all with the same desire to live the Gospel! Another thing that I'm grateful for is that Emanuel has a strong desire to go to the temple! It gives me so much joy to know that one day they will have the opportunity to be sealed as a family for time and all eternity!

One of our investigators, Ernesto, recently had a tragedy happen in his family. This week his brother got hit by a car, and is currently in the hospital in San Miguel. Yesterday, we visited him and testified to him of the power of the Atonement. We testified that Jesus Christ suffered for not only our sins, but for ALL of our afflictions, sorrows, trials, sicknesses and temptations. We promised him that through the Atonement, he can receive peace and comfort and that he'll be able to feel our Savior's love. We also promised him that he will be able to receive strength to quit smoking as he continues to prepare for baptism.

That's so awesome that Brother Fife served where I am! We'll definitely have to talk during Christmas!

I love that story about President Hinckley! Sometimes it's hard to not think about things from home, but I know that as I focus, I'll be able to have the Spirit with me always and be able to serve to my full capacity! Thanks for you words of love and advice!

"The Power of Prayer"

¡Hola!

This past week has been pretty awesome! We set some more baptismal dates, and we're continuing to help our investigators prepare to meet their goals of baptism.

I testify of the power of prayer! I have been praying for our investigators, and I've seen a change in them. As we've taught our investigators, I've been able to see the Spirit working in them as they hear the truths of the Restored Gospel of Jesus Christ. As I testify of those things that I know to be true for myself, I can feel the Spirit also testifying to them that it is true.

One of our investigators, Ernesto, had a problem with smoking, but he hasn't done it since last Friday. We gave him gum to help him, but I know that the most important part is what we have taught him about the importance of prayer, fasting, and reading the scriptures. I know that the Lord is helping our investigators prepare for baptism, and I can feel the love that He has for them.

A Message From President And Sister Glazier

Hello,

We are the Glaziers in San Salvador. We received Elder San Diego here. He is very well prepared and has great faith. We are grateful to serve with him here in this part of the Lord's vineyard. Thank you for preparing him so very well--he is a fine young man. I hope your family receives many blessings for the sacrifice you have made to bring the gospel to many of God’s children here on earth. I know you will see God’s hand in your life and the life of your son during his mission. One of the promises of God to his missionaries is that they will be protected and watched over.

His preparation day is every Monday. He can write and read your email on that day. He sends his love to all of you.

We love our missionaries.  We love and appreciate their faithful families.  We pray that, together, we will all grow in our personal conversion to the Lord.  Our mission theme is: "I am a disciple of Jesus Christ, and will be until the day I die."  We are working diligently to convert more than just the people of El Salvador.  We so appreciate your faith and prayers on behalf of all our missionaries here.

Fechas (Dates) For Baptisms!

¡Hola todos!

Things are going great over here! I get sweaty everyday, but it's all good. The weather's pretty nice in my area, and I've gotten used to the humidity so I don't really notice it anymore. The food's good and my companions are awesome.

Ha-ha, we used to have the best home in the mission, but recently everything seems to be going wrong with it. For a couple of days we didn't have water, a couple of days ago the electric heated shower head broke, and last night we ran out of gas for the stove. We'll get all of it taken care of though.

We're walking in our mission and we take buses when we need to come to Usulutan for P-days and Zone Conferences. I have mosquito repellent that I received when I got here, but sometimes it doesn't seem to work.

That's so awesome to hear about the Gilbert Temple and how things are going with you guys! We have fechas (dates) for baptisms, but we'e just trying to help some of our investigators stop smoking, drinking coffee, etc.

Well, I don't have too much time, but I know that as we continue to work hard, have faith, and be exactly obedient that we will see miracles!

¡Bienvenidos a El Salvador y Santiago de Maria!

¡Hola Todos!

Well, today marks the end of my first week in the mission field! My area is Santiago De Maria and my zone is Usulutan.

When we first stepped off the plane, I could instantly feel the humidity, and once we got outside to meet President and Sister Glazier my glasses fogged up! We got in at about 9ish, and the Elders slept at the mission office while the Sisters got to sleep at the President's house.

The next day, we had the privilage of attending the San Salvador Temple with President and Sister Glazier! It was an awesome experience and the temple was beautiful! After we finished our session, we went to President Glazier's house to receive missionary training for the rest of the day. We were allowed to write to say that we arrived, but I wasn't able to because there wasn't enough time and only one of the President's computers was working.

On Wednesday, we had a change meeting where we found out our companionships. I ended up being in a trio! My trainer/"dad" is Elder Aldridge from North Carolina and the other Elder in our companionship/"my twin" is Elder Sarceño from Guatemala. Elder Aldridge got assigned to train both of us!

Things have been great this past week. At first, it was really hard for me to understand people because they talk fast and mumble sometimes, but I've been praying for help to understand, and I know that the Lord has helped me. Now, I'm able to understand better, and I know that I'll only continue to improve! Yesterday, we had four investigators at church, which Elder Aldridge told me is the most we've ever had! I love the work, and I can't wait for our first baptismal date in two weeks!

¡Adios CCM y Hola El Salvador!

¡Hola todos!

Well, this is it. Tomorrow I leave for El Salvador! Being here at El CCM has been a great experience for me. I've learned and progressed so much! I feel confident in my Spanish and I know that my testimony of the Gospel has increased! Today, we had a district testimony meeting, and it was one of the most spiritual experiences I've had while being here. Hearing each member of my district share their testimonies was so powerful and inspiring! I'm so grateful that I've been able to get to know my district and spend time with all of them. I know that Heavenly Father brought all of us together to be here at this specific time in order for us to learn and grow from each other. I'm super stoked for all of us and the privilege we have to be servants and representatives of the Lord and to bring His Restored Gospel and all of the blessings that come from it to those who are searching for truth! I know that we'll all be great missionaries, and that we'll continue to grow and progress as we serve the Lord and the people in our missions with all our hearts, mights, minds, and strengths!

I'm especially grateful for my teacher Hermano May. He is one of THE MOST Christlike people I've ever met! I've learned so much from him through his teaching and example! You can tell that he has the light of Christ with him! You can see it in his eyes! When he walks in the room, he always has a huge smile on his face, and you can feel the genuine love he has for every person he meets! He's so humble though that he would never say any of these things himself. I hope that I can be as great as he is! In fact, he told us, "I don't want you to be like me, I want you to be better than me!" One thing that he promised us from his own mission experience was that if we are exactly obedient we will all see miracles as we love the people and work hard! I swear, he is literally a Scripture Master! No matter what your question or concern is he has a scripture to answer it exactly! I know that he's a true, true friend and I'm glad I was able to be his student. I'm going to take his challenge and apply everything I've learned to become the best missionary I can be, and that the Lord expects me to be!

Rise Up! We Can Do It Now!

¡Hola todos!

Well, the days are winding down. I leave Tuesday morning! My Spanish is a lot better than when I first got here! I'm pretty much able to read the Book of Mormon in Spanish! Sometimes there's a word here and there that I don't know, but for the most part I can understand it. I feel confident in my preparation for the mission field, and I know that I'll continue to improve as I serve in El Salvador!

General Conference was awesome! That was definitely one of the best conferences I've ever watched! I feel that I was more focused than I've ever been and I loved all of the messages! I also took notes on all of the sessions, and I feel that my notes were directed more by the Spirit than just writing down everything the speakers said. My favorite talk was Dieter F. Uchtdorf´s from the Priesthood Session. His message was to "RISE UP!" and that "WE CAN DO IT NOW!" with whatever trials we have in our lives. I loved that! That's going to be my quote from now on!

I know that as I put Heavenly Father and Jesus Christ first that my faith in them will continue to grow and that all of the blessings that have been promised to me will come to pass through my faithfulness. Last night, we learned that faith is the grand governing principle, and that through it we are able to accomplish all of our righteous desires! This earth was created through the faith of the Lord Jesus Christ! I know that He lives, that He suffered and died for all of us, and that through sincere repentance of our sins and faith on Him that the demands of justice are satisfied through His mercy and that as we continue enduring in faith that we will have Eternal Life! I say these things in the name of Jesus Christ, amen.

Could Be The Orange Juice?!?!

¡Hola!

So, I had a pretty intense experience this past Saturday. I woke up and ate breakfast as usual, but during class I felt kind of itchy and I had some bumps on my arm. I didn't really think much of it, but later it started getting worse and I was itchy all over! We went to the clinic to get it checked out, and I was having some kind of allergic reaction! When the doc checked me out, I was red almost all over! Then I had to get a shot in my butt and he gave me 3 antihistamine pills that I had to take every 8 hours. I still don't know what caused it, but it must have been either the orange juice (which hadn't done anything before) or the eggs and potatoes (which shouldn't have done anything).

Anyway, I got better on Sunday and the week went by the same as always. I can't believe that I'm leaving for the field in less than two weeks! I feel a lot more confident with Spanish now, and I know that I'll become fluent once I've been in the field for a bit. For now, I just need to keep on learning/re-learning and practicing it.

Things have been going well with our progressing investigators Ricardo and Hortencia, but as always there are ways that we can improve ourselves as teachers. They've both committed to baptism and now we just need to keep on teaching and preparing them for it.

We as a district are also teaching each other as investigators now. It helps a lot because as we genuinely get into the role it gives us an idea of what an investigator might think and feel as they are taught.

Sounds like things are going great with you guys and Eric! I encourage you guys to make time for personal and family scripture study and prayer. I know that as you do that the Lord will bless you for your efforts and that you'll grow closer to Him! GC (General Conference) is going to be awesome! I know that the talks are inspired by the Lord for His church and that as we follow and apply the counsel of the Brethren that we will be blessed for our obedience (D&C 130:20-21).

A Day At the Mexico City Temple

Hey Everyone,

Everything is going great and the Spanish is coming along.  It's great having Elder Roundy as my comp, we really have a good time together.

Today we had the opportunity to go to the Mexico City Temple, and it was an awesome experience. Even though the session was in Spanish, I could still feel the Spirit and understand some of what was said from what I remember.

I testify that God is our Heavenly Father, that He loves all of us, that we are His children, and that He wants us to return to live with Him again. I know that He created a plan for us to return to live with Him again by allowing us to come to this Earth which He created, to gain a body, choose between right and wrong, repent, and exercise faith in Him. I know that Christ suffered and died for our sins, that He felt every pain, sickness, trial, weakness, temptation, and heartache that each of us have had and will have in our lives, and that as we turn to Him in sincere prayer and repentance that He will forgive us and bless us as we obey His commandments, and I say these things in the name of Jesus Christ, amen.

Love,
